Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter was on the 24th day of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her creative and artistic side as a child, thanks to Aunt Denise. She was an evening nurse in order to give her mother the time she needed during the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art and theater. DuVernay instantly became enthralled when she showed her the 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay learnt by doing that art is a great tool to engage in social activism. DuVernay learned to be socially conscious by her mother. While DuVernay grew up living in Compton with her parents, she lived in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled Civil Rights marches that occurred across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English and African American study. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism at the age of an elementary school student. Her first job was working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the task of watching the residence and scrutinizing the waste from one of the jury. Following her disappointment with journalism by the tasks she was given and deciding to go after an interest in public relations. DuVernay started her career as a junior public relations assistant at a small film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotions networks like Urban Beauty Collective.
